Byron Bay is famous as the place to go to 'cheer up, slow down and chill out'. An artsy town with a hippy vibe, it's a favourite stop for many backpackers. Aside from delicious, trendy places to eat and drink, there is a lot to do here - skydive, surf, SCUBA dive or kayak with dolphins to name a few. For a budget friendly activity, take a walk to the Byron Lighthouse, perched on Australia's most easterly point. During the right time of year, keep an eye out for migrating whales, or just enjoy a sunrise if you can drag yourself out of bed early enough.
If the beach is not your thing, the hinterland offers a different kind of nature spectacle - Minyon Falls, Mount Warning, and Nimbin, an even more hippy town, are all worth checking out.
